U.S. Cities Spending Millions of Taxpayer Dollars to Ship Migrants Out
As the influx of migrants and asylum seekers continues to overwhelm the southern border, U.S. cities are facing the financial burden of accommodating these individuals. And it's not just conservative states acting – even Democratic-led cities are spending millions of taxpayer dollars to move migrants elsewhere.
Texas has spent a staggering $86.1 million between April 2022 and October 2023 to transport over 66,000 migrants and asylum seekers to other parts of the country.
This move, spearheaded by Gov. Greg Abbott, has drawn criticism from the left for being a "stunt" ahead of the midterms. But with no national coordination for handling the influx of migrants, states are forced to come up with their own solutions.
Florida's Gov. Ron DeSantis allocated $12 million for migrant transportation, leading to some controversial moves such as sending migrants to Martha's Vineyard and Sacramento.
It's not just red state governors making statements – Democratic-led cities like New York and Chicago are also participating in transportation programs for migrants.
Even Denver, a city not usually associated with conservative policies, has spent nearly $4.3 million on migrant transportation costs.
Mayor Mike Johnston defended the program, saying they "think the humanitarian thing to do is to get you to the place where you have the best chance of succeeding." However, with the hefty price tag and potential legal challenges, many are questioning the effectiveness and fairness of these programs.
