Shooting outside Colorado courthouse, one dead and one in custody
The El Paso County courthouse was rocked by gunfire on Thursday morning, leaving one person dead and another in police custody. According to Colorado Springs police, the shooting was reported around 10:03 a.m. and resulted in a chaotic scene outside the courthouse.
Eyewitnesses reported hearing approximately nine gunshots and seeing people running in all directions. Sarah Scott, who was inside her truck at the time of the shooting, described the scene as "crazy" and saw officers taking the suspect into custody while he screamed "it's not over."
Police spokesperson Ira Cronin confirmed in a news conference that this was an "isolated incident" and there is no danger to the public. The shooting is currently under investigation as a homicide.
The courthouse was immediately closed for the remainder of the day, with authorities assuring the community that this was not an active shooter situation. The Colorado Springs Police Department took to X (formerly Twitter) to reassure the public and provide updates on the situation.
Two additional minor injuries were also reported, according to Colorado Springs Fire Department spokesperson Ashley Franco. However, police confirmed that no officers discharged their weapons during the incident.
Eyewitnesses who were in the courthouse or outside during the shooting described a chaotic and scary scene. Julia Ferendez, a victim advocate, recounted hearing gunshots and seeing the police take the suspect into custody as she was leaving the courthouse. Another witness, who chose to remain anonymous, described the fear and panic she felt while on jury duty.
In light of the shooting, all court proceedings for the day were canceled and citizens currently in the courthouse were released through the south entrance to protect the crime scene.
Tejon Street in front of the courthouse was closed between Colorado Avenue and Vermijo Street, and officials estimate it will take several hours for the scene to be cleared and traffic to resume.
The identity of the victim and the suspect have not yet been released. Fox News will continue to provide updates on this developing story.
