Colorado Committee Begins All Night Debate on Bill to Ban Sale of Assault Weapons

Written by: A. Hamilton

Buckle up, Coloradans, as we gear up for a long night at the state Capitol. Second Amendment advocates from across the state are gathering to defend their constitutional rights against the extreme left's determined efforts to strip us of our ability to protect ourselves and our families.

As of early Tuesday morning, more than 650 people had signed up to testify against this unconstitutional assault on our rights. However, Capitol staffers predict that a vote on the bill may not happen until early Wednesday morning.

House Bill 24-1292, titled "Prohibit Certain Weapons Used in Mass Shootings," introduced on February 12th by radical Democrats Reps. Elisabeth Epps and Tim Hernández, and co-sponsored by 14 other House Democrats is now in committee up for its first vote.

PRIME SPONSORS

Rep. Tim Hernández

Rep. Elisabeth Epps

This bill, which failed famously last session, aims to ban the sale, purchase, transfer, import, and manufacture of so-called "assault weapons" in Colorado.

The definition of these firearms, as outlined in the bill, includes semi-automatic rifles and pistols with fixed large-capacity magazines or those that can accept detachable magazines, along with several other types of high-powered firearms.

What is particularly concerning is the recent reshuffling of the committee members. Two legislators who previously voted against this bill have been replaced by progressive lawmakers who are now co-sponsoring the bill. This move appears to be nothing more than an attempt to stack the committee in favor of the bill's passage. It is a blatant disregard for the principles of fair representation and a clear indication of the Democrat caucus' anti-Second Amendment agenda.

The sponsors of this bill, Epps and Hernández, have hinted at making slight changes related to the transfer and transportation of these firearms. However, these changes do not alter the fact that this bill infringes upon the rights of law-abiding citizens to own and use firearms for self-defense.

If passed on Tuesday, the bill will proceed to the House Appropriations Committee before eventually reaching the House floor for a full vote.

The bill's definition of assault weapons is overly broad and includes .50 caliber rifles, semi-automatic rifles or pistols with detachable magazines or the potential for modification, and semi-automatic rifles or pistols with fixed, large-capacity magazines. It lists dozens of AK, AR, and Thompson models. Furthermore, the bill seeks to ban "rapid-fire trigger activators" and imposes exorbitant fines for violations.

It is worth noting that Epps previously introduced a similar bill last session, but it failed to make it through the House Judiciary Committee. It is clear that the proponents of this bill are relentless in their pursuit to dismantle our Second Amendment rights, disregarding the will of the people and the principles upon which our nation was founded.

Tonight, the state Capitol will resound with passionate testimonies from Coloradans on both sides of the debate. By Wednesday morning, we will know whether emotions or the fundamental right to self-protection prevailed.
