Another Democrat member of the Colorado House resigns due to caucus division and a toxic atmosphere.

Another Colorado House Democrat has announced his resignation, citing infighting and a "polarized and contentious atmosphere" as contributing factors.

State House Representative Said Sharbini made the announcement on Monday, just weeks before the start of the new legislative session.

In his resignation letter addressed to House leaders, Sharbini stated that the financial strain and low compensation played a role in his decision. However, he also emphasized that the "polarized and contentious atmosphere" within the chamber hindered constructive dialogue, further prompting his departure.

Sharbini, an attorney from Thornton, was serving his first term after winning the 2022 election. He now joins the ranks of the second freshman House Democrat to resign this month.

Sharbini expressed that it became increasingly clear that serving in the legislature was placing an untenable financial burden on his family.

Despite knowing what legislators were paid when he ran for his seat, he highlighted the inadequate compensation provided for the responsibilities and commitments of the role, stating that it did not align with the cost of living and his family's financial needs.

State lawmakers in Colorado earn approximately $42,000 for the 120 day session, which Sharbini has now deemed insufficient.

This resignation adds to the series of shakeups leading up to the upcoming session, as former Democratic Representative Ruby Dickson resigned earlier this month, shortly after the conclusion of a special session on property taxes.

In his resignation letter, Sharbini also addressed the challenging work environment within the Democratic caucus, making it increasingly difficult for him to effectively serve his constituents and fulfill his duties. He expressed hope that those who continue in this work take notice and engage in more open and honest dialogue regarding future legislation and decorum in the chamber.

Over the past year, there have been various intense moments of stress and raw emotion in the legislature.

These include a walkout by Republican lawmakers on the final day of the spring session, expressing their dissatisfaction with how Democrats were running the chamber—silencing the minority with “Rule 14.” Additionally, there was an emotional confrontation during a Democratic caucus meeting and Rep. Epps curing at Jewish members from the gallery during the special session.
