Will U.S. Healthcare Be PRIME for Change
Amazon Offers Healthcare Memberships to Prime Users – A Bold Move to Revolutionize Healthcare Delivery.
Amazon, the world’s largest online retailer, continues its push into the healthcare industry with a game-changing announcement – the offering of healthcare memberships for its Prime members. This bold move will provide unprecedented access to high-quality healthcare services through Amazon’s newly acquired primary care chain, One Medical.
This move marks Amazon’s biggest foray into the healthcare sector, after acquiring One Medical for a staggering $3.9 billion earlier this year. Along with its existing offerings such as Amazon Clinic telehealth services and generic drugs through RxPass, this new membership option is yet another example of how the company is leveraging technology to dominate the healthcare delivery market.
Prime members will now have the option to purchase an annual membership for One Medical at a discounted rate of $9 per month or $99 per year.
The membership will include unlimited 24/7 virtual services and online scheduling for same- or next-day appointments, among other benefits. Members will also be able to add up to five family members at an additional cost.
This move poses a challenge to other retailers who are vying for a piece of the same pie. As Prime members are already accustomed to the convenience and efficiency of Amazon’s services, this membership option will be hard to resist, particularly during the current healthcare climate of open enrollment and cold and flu season.
Analysts predict that this expansion into healthcare will also put pressure on smaller players in the digital health space who offer similar services. With Amazon’s vast resources and ability to scale quickly, it may prove difficult for these smaller companies to compete.
One Medical has been struggling to turn a profit, and Amazon will need to ensure that the quality and speed of care is not compromised as it tries to scale its healthcare offerings.

Employers may also take note of this membership option, as over 8,500 already include One Medical in their provider networks. If Amazon can successfully scale its individual memberships, it may become an attractive option for employers to include in their health plans.
Ultimately, this move by Amazon will likely have a ripple effect in the healthcare industry. As competitors scramble to keep up and consumers reap the benefits of lower costs and increased convenience, the next revolution of healthcare delivery could have just begun.
