Tragic Crash in Colorado Claims Lives of Three University of Wyoming Swimmers

A devastating car crash on a Colorado highway has left the University of Wyoming swimming and diving team mourning the loss of three of their own.

The tragic incident occurred on Thursday afternoon near the state border, resulting in the deaths of an 18-year-old Carson Muir and Charlie Clark and Luke Slabber aged 21 and 22, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

Two other men aged 20 and 21 sustained injuries in the crash. Thankfully, their injuries were deemed non-life-threatening, and they were transported to the hospital for treatment, according to the reporting of Fox31Denver.

The collision took place at around 2:44 p.m. local time when an SUV veered from the southbound lanes onto the northbound lanes and rolled down an embankment. Tragically, two individuals were ejected from the vehicle during the accident.

Upon learning of the devastating news, Dave Denniston, the head coach of the Wyoming swim team, expressed his profound sorrow. He told SwimSwam that he was "devastated" by the crash and the loss of his players. The entire university community, including President Ed Seidel, expressed their condolences and shared in the grief.

"We are heartsick at the news of this terrible tragedy for our university, our state, our student-athlete community and, most importantly, the families and friends of these young people," President Seidel said in a statement. "Words are insufficient to express our sadness."

At the time of the crash, most of the Wyoming women's swim team was participating in the Mountain West Conference Women's Swimming and Diving Championships in Houston.

Tom Burman, the athletics director at the University of Wyoming, offered his thoughts and prayers to the student-athletes, coaches, families, and friends affected by the devastating loss. He acknowledged the difficulty of losing members of the university family and assured that counseling services are available to support the student-athletes and coaches during this challenging time.
