The Swap Pro-Military Coloradans Are Making

Our freedom was not inherited, it was fought for and defended by the brave men and women of our armed forces. They have sacrificed their lives, time, and comfort to ensure that we continue to live in a free and prosperous nation.

To honor this sacrifice, Operation Green Light is in full swing in both Arapahoe and Douglas Counties, as we prepare to honor and show our appreciation for the brave men and women who have served our country in the United States military.

County buildings in Arapahoe and Douglas County will continue to be illuminated green from through Veterans Day’s on November 11th.

"As a board, we honor the service and sacrifice of our nation's heroes. We hope this effort not only illuminates the immense pride we feel for our veterans but also ignites the type of support they deserve,” said Douglas County Commissioner and Army veteran George Teal. “Please join us in this small token of appreciation for those who secure our freedoms throughout the year."

In addition to honoring all our brave American heroes, Douglas County is also taking the opportunity to specifically recognize women veterans and active-duty service members.

A special ceremony will be held on November 11th, 2023, to honor all of Douglas County's veterans.

This national event, created by the National Association of Counties (NACo), not only seeks to pay tribute to our veterans but also bring attention to the resources available for them in every participating state. The green lights are a symbol of hope and support for the often-overlooked issues faced by our veterans.

Arapahoe County Commissioner Bill Holen, a disabled Army Vietnam veteran, emphasized the importance of this event in a press release, saying, "Operation Green Light shines a light on the immense sacrifices our veterans have made. We hope to see participation across the county so that our veterans know we appreciate their service and that we have their backs with supportive programs and services built specifically for them."

Operation Green Light is not the only way these counties are showing support for their veterans.

Arapahoe County has two Veterans Services Centers that provide free services to all those who have served. Holen emphasized the importance of these centers, which are "staffed by veterans for veterans," stating, "There's a camaraderie among service members and a built-in level of trust that helps us connect with clients in a personal and effective way."

With the second largest veteran population in the state of Colorado, Arapahoe County has already assisted over 643 veteran claims this year, with an additional 700 anticipated by the end of the year. These services are vital in ensuring our veterans receive the support and assistance they deserve after serving our country.

And it's not just county buildings that are taking part in Operation Green Light.

Residents and businesses are also invited to join in by changing a single light bulb to green, either inside or outside their homes or buildings. This small change serves as a powerful symbol of gratitude and support for our veterans.

As we honor and recognize our veterans this Veterans Day, let us also remember to show our support and appreciation for them throughout the year.
