The community of Cortez, Colorado is reeling after the tragic death of one of their own.

On Wednesday, Cortez Police Sgt. Michael Moran was killed in the line of duty during a routine traffic stop.

According to the Cortez Police Department, shots were fired during the stop, leaving Moran injured. The suspects fled the scene but were eventually located and engaged in a shootout with police, resulting in one suspect dead and the other in custody.

Moran, a 9-year veteran of the Marines who served two tours in Iraq, joined the Cortez Police Department in 2012. In 2016, he became a K-9 handler and was most proud of his canine partner, Otto, who served by his side until retiring last year.

Moran was known for his dedication to his job and his sense of humor among his colleagues. He leaves behind two daughters, as well as numerous friends and family members.

In a statement issued by Colorado House Minority Leader Rep. Mike Lynch, he expressed his condolences to Moran's family and the Cortez Police Department. "Sgt. Moran will be remembered for his dedication to protecting and serving his community. We are forever grateful for his sacrifice and ask for the community's thoughts and prayers during this difficult time."

Governor Jared Polis also released a statement, saying, "I am saddened to hear of the tragic passing of the Cortez police officer in the line of duty. This officer dedicated their career to serving and protecting their community. My thoughts and prayers are with their family, as well as the Cortez Police Department and the community during this time."

This is the first time in over two decades that a Cortez police officer has been killed in the line of duty, with the last death being that of officer Dale Claxton in 1998.

The Colorado State Patrol and Cortez Police Department are currently investigating the incident.

The entire community is showing their support for the Cortez Police Department by lowering flags to half-staff. As we grieve the loss of Sgt. Michael Moran, let us remember his bravery and sacrifice as he selflessly served and protected his community.
