School boards have become one of the front lines for democracy

The power of local school boards to shape the education of millions of students across the country should not be underestimated. These elected officials have been at the forefront of education policy for over 375 years, and in recent times, they have faced their share of controversies.

The Denver Public School Board is a prime example of the ongoing battles being fought in school board meetings across the country. For the past few years, the board has been embroiled in numerous controversies, ranging from teacher strikes, the inability to get along with each other, the COVID-19 pandemic, and now, it’s controversial handling of migrants.

The pandemic brought to light the power of school boards and their decisions, with many parents paying closer attention to the meetings and policies being discussed. This newfound attention has also resulted in a rise in political engagement, as parents now have the ability to attend meetings virtually and participate in the decisions being made.

It's important to understand the history of school boards to truly grasp the impact they have on education. The first school board was created back in 1647 in the Massachusetts Bay Colony, with the goal of local towns maintaining their own schools.

Since then, school boards have evolved and played a vital role in shaping the education system in the United States.

With the rise of issues that divide communities, school boards have increasingly become a battleground for controversial topics.

From the Scopes Trial in 1925 to the current fights over critical race theory and mask mandates, school board meetings have turned into heated and at times violent showdowns between different ideologies.

In recent years, the debate over parental rights has also taken center stage, with conservative groups pushing for more control over what is taught in schools and which books are available in libraries. This push has led to contentious meetings and even arrests in some cases.

But while school boards continue to be a focal point for these complex issues, they also play a crucial role in making decisions that directly impact students, such as budget allocations and hiring superintendents.
