POLL: Majority of Americans agree with the Colorado Supreme Court's Decision to Remove Trump From Primary Ballot, ‘flash poll’
In a recent flash poll, a majority of Americans, including a significant number of self-described Republicans, backed the Colorado Supreme Court's ruling to disqualify former President Donald Trump from the state's primary ballot.
The online YouGov survey showed that 54% of respondents either "strongly" or "somewhat" approved of the court's decision, while 35% expressed disapproval. A further 12% remained unsure about their stance on the matter.
Opinions on the ruling were largely divided along partisan lines, with approximately 84% of Democrats supporting the decision compared to only 24% of Republicans. Independent voters showed a more balanced perspective, with 48% approving of the ruling and 35% expressing disapproval.
The 4-3 ruling, which was handed down on Tuesday evening, cited Section 3 of the Fourteenth Amendment, also known as the Insurrection Clause or Disqualification Clause.
This clause prohibits individuals who have engaged in "insurrection or rebellion" from holding office. The Democrat-appointed justices on Colorado's highest court concluded that Trump's actions on January 6, 2021, constituted active and voluntary participation in the insurrection that occurred that day.
While the ruling was automatically stayed until January 4 to allow Trump's team to file an appeal to the US Supreme Court, they have already expressed their intention to do so.
The YouGov poll also asked respondents about their predictions regarding the US Supreme Court's handling of the Colorado ruling. 43% expected the high court to reverse the decision, 23% believed it would uphold the ruling, and 34% remained unsure.

Following the Colorado ruling, Democratic politicians in California and New York, both blue states, have raised concerns about Trump's presence on primary ballots in their respective states. However, similar challenges against Trump in Florida and New Hampshire were rejected, primarily on jurisdictional or procedural grounds. Additionally, a court of appeals in Michigan chose not to remove Trump from the primary ballot.
Colorado's 2024 GOP primary is scheduled to take place on March 5, 2024. If the ruling stands, the state's Republican Party has hinted at the possibility of shifting to a caucus system instead of a primary.
The YouGov poll, conducted on Wednesday, surveyed 3,492 US adults and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
