One-third of adults in new poll say Biden’s election was illegitimate

A new poll released this week by The Washington Post and the University of Maryland has revealed that one-third of U.S. adults believe that President Joe Biden's election in 2020 was not legitimate. As the third anniversary of the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol protest approaches, the poll also examined the changing views surrounding the events of the day and the 2020 election.

According to the Post-UMD survey, 62 percent of adults now say that Biden was legitimately elected, a decrease from 69 percent in a similar poll conducted in December 2021. The sharpest decline in those who believe the election results were legitimate was seen among Republicans, with only 31 percent saying so in 2023, down from 39 percent two years earlier.

On the other hand, 91 percent of Democrats say that Biden's election was legitimate, a slight decrease from 94 percent two years ago. Among independents, 66 percent believe the incumbent was legitimately elected, down from 72 percent in 2021.

The Post noted that among those who primarily get their information from conservative news outlets, such as Fox News, only about 3 in 10 people believe that Biden's election was legitimate.

The Post-UMD poll was conducted from December 14 to 18 among 1,024 U.S. adults with a margin of error of plus or minus 4.1 percentage points. For subgroups, the error margin is even larger.
