Motor vehicle thefts down statewide, but up more than 30 precent in Colorado Springs
When it comes to crime in Colorado, particularly vehicle thefts, there’s some good news and some bad news depending on where you live.
According to the Colorado Crime Statistics website, the data for December 2023 is yet to be posted, comparing the crime statistics from 2022 to 11 months' worth of 2023 gives us an indication of the trends in Colorado.
One notable trend is a significant decrease in vehicle thefts statewide, with a decrease of over 20%.
However, the city of Pueblo has seen relatively stable numbers, with only a slight 3% decrease year over year. These figures may change once the data for December 2023 is made available.
In contrast, Colorado Springs stands out with an increase of approximately 46% in motor vehicle thefts when comparing 2022 to 2023 on the state website.
Colorado Springs Police specifically pointed out that stolen Kia and Hyundai vehicles have been on the rise due to a social media trend known as 'The Kia Boys.' PD says there are no signs of this popular crime trend among juveniles slowing down in Colorado Springs.
