McCarthy Calls it Quits
Former House Speaker Representative Kevin McCarthy has announced his decision to step down from Congress by the year's end.
In an op-ed featured in the Wall Street Journal on Wednesday, McCarthy expressed, "I have chosen to conclude my term in the House at the close of this year to contribute to the service of our nation in fresh capacities. I am aware that my journey is just beginning."
Last month, some members of the Republican party voiced discontent over the expulsion vote involving Santos, asserting that it could further jeopardize the majority. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene criticized it as "an unwise strategy."
McCarthy's tenure as speaker was marked by a tumultuous 8-month period, making him the first to be removed from this position. Representative Matt Gaetz played a role in leading the campaign, symbolizing McCarthy's departure with the phrase "McLeavin'" after the announcement.
Following his removal, speculations about McCarthy's imminent departure from Congress gained traction. In October, McCarthy downplayed these speculations, telling reporters that he still had "a lot more work to do."
However, it was reported by Axios last week, citing sources, that privately McCarthy had communicated to donors his intention to "get the hell out."
