Judge Presiding Over Trump Trial in NYC Faces Bombardment of Threats

The New York judge presiding over Donald Trump's civil fraud trial, Judge Arthur Engoron, and his clerk, Allison Greenfield, have become the targets of a barrage of death threats and antisemitic abuse.

Reports indicate that both Judge Engoron and Greenfield have received hundreds of threatening, harassing, and disparaging messages through various channels, including phone calls and social media.

Attorneys representing the New York state court system have argued for the imposition of gag orders on Trump, citing "serious and credible" threats against the judge and his clerk.

Recently disclosed voicemail messages, included in court filings, lay bare the extent of the abuse directed at Engoron and Greenfield. Alongside racist and sexist attacks, these messages contain multiple death threats, with one caller chillingly stating, "You should be assassinated... executed."

Another message reads, "Resign now, you dirty, treasonous piece of trash snake. We are coming to remove you permanently."

Adding fuel to the fire, last month Trump posted an image of Greenfield on his social network, falsely labeling her as the "girlfriend" of Chuck Schumer, the Democratic Senate majority leader. In response, Judge Engoron issued a limited gag order, preventing the former president from making further comments about court staff.

However, a New York appeals court judge recently paused this gag order, granting Trump the freedom to comment on court staff while the appeals process unfolds.

The situation has escalated to such an extent that Greenfield's personal contact details have been compromised, according to Charles Hollon, a court safety official. Hollon reveals that Greenfield has been bombarded with approximately 20-30 calls per day to her personal cellphone and 30-50 online messages per day. Shockingly, since the interim stay lifted the gag orders on November 16, 2023, around half of the abusive messages have taken on an antisemitic nature.

The ongoing fraud case, led by New York Attorney General Letitia James, alleges that the Trump Organization fraudulently inflated property values to secure favorable loans.

Engoron's pre-trial summary judgment found Trump guilty of fraud, resulting in the revocation of his New York business licenses and effectively ending his ability to conduct business in the state. Given that this is a bench trial without a jury, Engoron holds sole authority over the proceedings.
