Huge First Snow Totals of the Year

The unexpected snowfall of the weekend surprised many parts of Colorado, with some areas receiving more than expected. Snowmass near Aspen was the ultimate winner of the day with a stunning 25 inches of fresh powder, as captured by OpenSnow.

Arapahoe Basin is officially open for the 2023-24 ski season.

Other popular ski areas, such as Crested Butte and Copper, also saw impressive snow totals of 19 and 17 inches respectively. This welcomed snowfall delighted skiers and snowboarders, as it made for a powdery first ski day at Arapahoe Basin, the first ski area to open this year.

The Front Range left a thick blanket of snow that made for perfect snowman-building conditions. While parts of Denver reached a respectable 7.5 inches, some areas south and east of the city saw even bigger totals.

Arapahoe Basin will become the first ski area in the state to open this morning. And on that very first chairlift will be Nate Dogggg and Trailer Tom. They will have gotten “first chair” of the season — at any Colorado ski area — for 31 winters straight.

Several neighborhoods in Aurora and Englewood woke up to about 10 inches of the white stuff Sunday. Even suburban areas, like Wheat Ridge, were blanketed with 6 inches.

But perhaps the most surprising snow total came from Boulder, which saw 4-6 inches despite being located just a short distance from Denver.

"The Front Range really got the brunt of it, with some areas receiving more snow than expected," said Fox News weather expert, Stormy Storm. "But let's face it, who doesn't love a good snow day?"

According to 9News meteorologist Chris Bianchi, this is the biggest snowstorm in Denver this early since 2009, leaving residents excited for the upcoming winter season.

As expected, the snowy weather caused some minor delays and accidents on the roads, but overall, people were thrilled for the unexpected winter wonderland.

So while the rest of the country may be experiencing a warm and sunny fall, Colorado has gone straight to winter, and most of us couldn't be happier.
