Gun-Related Killings in Denver on Decline
The rate of gun-related killings in Denver has fallen in 2022, bucking a two-year trend of increasing violence.
According to an analysis by the left-leaning Center for American Progress Action Fund, there were 11.5 gun-related homicides per 100,000 residents in the Mile High City last year. While this is down from 12.9 in 2021, it is still significantly higher than the 2015 rate of 6.9.
This downward trend in gun-related deaths is a welcome relief for the city of Denver, which has been plagued by a rise in crime during the pandemic years. However, it is also a testament to the hard work and dedication of law enforcement, despite extremely difficult circumstances, and public safety efforts in tackling this issue.
According to Denver's police chief, the city has seen decreases in violent crimes this year compared to last, indicating a continued decline in gun-related killings. This is a promising sign that the policies put in place by the city's Democratic leadership are working.
But the release of this report by the Center for American Progress Action Fund has also sparked debate about the relationship between progressive policies and crime rates. It compared the gun-related homicide rates of blue-state cities and red-state cities from 2015 to 2022, and the results were eye-opening.
Despite having a Democratic governor and city council for most of this time period, Denver's gun-related killing rate was found to be higher than both the average rates of blue-state cities (7.2) and red-state cities (11.1). This is a clear indication that progressive policies do not necessarily lead to safer cities.
In fact, Denver's gun-related killing rate of 11.5 pales in comparison to other cities like New Orleans (65.3), Richmond (36.6), and Washington, D.C. (27.6). These cities have been largely controlled by Democratic leaders for decades, highlighting the failure of their policies to address the issue of gun violence.

Despite what some may claim, the facts speak for themselves. Stricter gun control measures and progressive policies do not lead to safer cities. It is only through a combination of effective public safety efforts, responsible gun ownership, and firm enforcement of existing laws that we can truly make our cities safer.
While the decrease in gun-related killings in Denver is a step in the right direction, there is still much work to be done.
