Fewer Republicans Than Gays, According to Colorado House Democrat

Recent claims by outspoken queer Colorado legislator Rep. Leslie Herod that, “there are more young people today who identify as LBGTQ than they do Republican,” have raised more than just a few eyebrows.

Herod’s use of squish facts have been called into question in the past, especially during debate of the poorly conceived police accountability bill. The passage of SB20-217 resulted in a spike in crime, drug use and physical assault.

But Rep. Herod’s recent unfounded claim that there are more LGBTQ+ young people than Republicans is far more than just rhetoric it reflects a narrow perspective rather than an accurate representation of the state's demographics.

While the failed mayoral candidate may have boldly claimed that her assertions were “a fact,” the experts clearly disagree.

According to the Williams Institute at UCLA School of Law, a well-recognized research organization focused on sexual orientation and gender identity law and public policy, Colorado has an estimated 4.9% adult LGBTQ+ population.

Meanwhile, according to Ballotpedia, in October 2022, the total number of registered voters in Colorado was 3,795,559: Democrats = 27.49%, Republicans = 24.72%, Independents = 45.99%, and Other political party members = 1.80%.

In some ways, it becomes easier to understand how many radical Democrats might introduce a disproportionate number of bills dealing with LGBTQ youth, abortion rights, and trans issues if they believe incorrectly that the population of Colorado was dominated by LGBTQ Coloradans – out numbering fiscally conservative Republicans.
