Eclipse to Grace Southwest Colorado's Skies in October

An incredible celestial event is set to grace the skies on October 14, 2023. Get your eclipse glasses ready and prepare to witness an annular eclipse like no other.

On this day, the moon will pass between the Earth and the Sun, creating a mesmerizing ring of fire in the sky. While other parts of the state will experience around 80% obscuration, residents and visitors in the southwestern corner of Colorado are in for a treat.

According to NASA's maps, the optimal viewing location lies southwest of Durango, with Cortez sitting right in the eclipse's path. And what better backdrop for this cosmic show than the awe-inspiring Mesa Verde National Park?

As the moon dances across the sun's surface, visitors to the park will witness a rare and breathtaking sight. But make sure to prioritize safety by keeping your eclipse glasses on throughout the event.

For those lucky enough to be in the southwestern corner, the eclipse is expected to begin shortly before 9:15 a.m., with the "ring of fire" in full effect at 10:31 a.m. and lasting an astonishing four minutes. The moon will then exit the opposite edge of the sun just after noon.

While a total solar eclipse is undeniably captivating, this annular eclipse promises to be a unique and unforgettable experience. So, mark your calendars and start planning your celestial road trip adventure to the southwest corner of Colorado in 2023. See you under the ring of fire!
