DoorDash Threatens Customers with Worse Service

In response to concerns over the rights and fair pay of its delivery workers, app-based delivery company DoorDash is now threatening its customers who choose not to tip their delivery drivers.

The company has implemented a new feature on its app that reminds customers of the consequences of not adding at least a few dollars as a tip when placing an order.

The screen, which pops up during the ordering process, warns customers that orders without tips may take longer to be delivered. It reads, “Are you sure you want to continue?” This tactic is DoorDash’s latest attempt to pressure customers into tipping their drivers, as the company has faced backlash over the treatment of its gig workers.

However, DoorDash defends its actions, claiming that most customers do leave tips and that the tips go directly to the delivery drivers. The company also plans to analyze the results of this pilot program before possibly implementing it on a national level.

This move by DoorDash has sparked debate among consumers, as tipping has traditionally been seen as a reward for good service.

A DoorDash customer was left hangry after a driver allegedly ate his entire WingStop order and left a note apologizing, saying they were ‘ broke and hungry.’ “I’m sorry I 8 cho food. I’m broke and hungry. Consider it like ur payin it 4ward. I’m quitting this lame a– job N E way. B blessed,” read the note, which was signed, “Your Door Dash Guy.”

Some individuals have expressed frustration at being expected to tip before even receiving the service. But for DoorDash delivery driver Carolyn Jones, tips are crucial as they make up a significant portion of her pay. In some cases, she earns only a few dollars from DoorDash, leaving her to rely heavily on tips from customers.

While DoorDash claims that customers still have the option not to tip, the company has also reported a decrease in orders with no tip since implementing this feature. This raises questions about how much pressure is being put on customers to tip their drivers by default.
