Democrats Overwhelmingly Disapprove of Biden's Border Handling, Poll Shows
A new report from the Pew Research Center reveals that Democrats' disapproval of the U.S. government's handling of migrant crossings at the southern border has reached its highest point during Joe Biden's presidency.
According to the report, 73% of surveyed Democrats rate the government's handling of the influx of migrants as "somewhat bad" or "very bad." This disapproval rating is only 11 percentage points lower than the disapproval ratings Democrats had during Donald Trump's presidency in 2019.
The numbers from the report, released on Thursday, paint a grim picture for Biden.
Last year, Pew recorded that 62% of Democrats disapproved of the government's handling of the border, and that number has risen to 73% this year.
President Biden released a video late Thursday slamming Republicans for rejecting βthe strongest and fairest border legislation in decades and then skipping town.β
This report comes at a time when immigration is at the forefront of political discourse. House Republicans recently voted to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas for his handling of migrant border crossings. Senate Republicans also blocked a border security deal, bringing an end to months of unsuccessful talks to strengthen border protections.
The issue of immigration was a key factor in the New York special election to fill a vacant seat in Congress. Former Democratic Rep. Tom Suozzi, who took a tough stance on border security, emerged victorious in the election.
In response to the criticism, Biden has stated that he is ready to solve the problem and secure the border. However, his actions have yet to match his words, leaving many Americans skeptical of his commitment to addressing the issue.
The Pew report also found that 78% of Americans surveyed view the large number of migrants seeking to enter the U.S. at the southern border as either a "crisis" or a "major problem." This sentiment aligns with previous polls that have shown voters expressing significant concerns about the situation at the border.
The Pew Research Center conducted the survey with 5,140 adults from January 16-21. The margin of sampling error is plus or minus 1.7 percentage points.
