Colorado's outdoor recreation industry is undoubtedly a major contributor to the state's economy, generating a whopping $13.9 billion in 2022.

This is a 19% increase from the previous year, making it the largest economic impact the industry has ever recorded. These impressive numbers were revealed in a new analysis by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, released on Friday.

According to the report, the outdoor recreation industry accounts for 2.8% of Colorado's gross domestic product (GDP) and provides around 130,000 jobs, a 9% increase from 2021. This goes to show just how significant the industry is in the state and gives it considerable influence among policymakers.

In a statement, Conor Hall, the director of Colorado's Outdoor Recreation Industry Office, emphasized the importance of the industry and called for continued support and sustainable growth. "We must continue to champion destination stewardship, more equitable access to the outdoors, a healthy workforce, and continued sustainable growth of the industry," he said.

This extraordinary growth is not just limited to Colorado, as the outdoor recreation industry is thriving across the country. In fact, it contributed a staggering $1.1 trillion to the national economy in 2022, growing at a rate of 4.8% – more than double the overall economy. Additionally, it amounted to 2.2% of the national GDP and provided 5 million jobs, according to the report.

The top five activities driving this economic impact in Colorado are RVing, boating and fishing, motorcycles and ATVs, hunting and shooting, and snow sports.

In fact, snow sports are the single largest contributor, contributing $1.4 billion to the state's economy. This is further evidence of Colorado's status as a top destination for outdoor enthusiasts.

The federal data also shows that personal expenditures on outdoor activities in Colorado increased by 10% in 2022, compared to the previous year. While it may not match the 15% jump seen at the height of the pandemic, it still marks the second consecutive year of double-digit growth.

It's clear that the outdoor recreation industry is a powerhouse in the state of Colorado and continues to bring in significant revenue and job opportunities.
