COLORADO GOVERNOR SPARKS CONTROVERSY WITH BOLD MARIJUANA MOVE

The push by Colorado Governor Jared Polis to have the federal government reclassify marijuana is a controversial move that raises serious concerns about the potential ramifications on the physical and mental health of young people.

Polis's full-throated support in a letter to President Joe Biden for marijuana's removal from the Schedule I classification, alongside drugs like LSD, peyote, and heroin, and its relocation to Schedule III, is seen by critics as a misguided attempt to downplay the risks associated with regular pot smoking. Despite the governor's argument that it is "about time" for this change, it is crucial to examine the disturbing trends that have emerged among young people due to regular marijuana use.

Numerous studies have shown that regular pot smoking can have detrimental effects on physical and mental health, particularly in adolescents. Prolonged marijuana use during the formative years can lead to a range of adverse outcomes, including cognitive impairments, increased risk of mental health disorders such as anxiety and depression, and decreased educational attainment.

Lowering the classification of marijuana could potentially send a message to younger individuals that it is a safe and harmless substance, leading to increased experimentation and use among teens. This, in turn, could exacerbate the existing health issues and increase the number of young people struggling with addiction and mental health problems.

Furthermore, the financial benefits that the marijuana industry might reap from this reclassification are concerning. While advocates argue that it could provide tax benefits and promote the acceptance of marijuana as a medical treatment, the potential consequences among teens should not be overlooked. The prospect of increased profitability might encourage companies to target younger demographics, potentially normalizing and encouraging marijuana use among vulnerable age groups.

Colorado, known for its significant marijuana industry, has already witnessed a decline in sales over the past two years. According to the Marijuana Industry Group, sales were down nearly $100 million in 2022 compared to the previous year, and 2023 sales are forecasted to be even lower. Additionally, the Vangst 2023 Jobs Report reveals that the state lost over 10,000 cannabis-related jobs in 2022.

Governor Polis's push to have the federal government reclassify marijuana is a decision that carries significant risks, particularly for the physical and mental well-being of young people. By downplaying the dangers and promoting wider acceptance of marijuana use, there is a real possibility of exacerbating the already disturbing health trends among teens.
