The Colorado Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has rejected twice as many personalized license plate applications in 2023 than it did in 2022. The DMV says the over 1,000 plates were rejected to ‘maintain decency and prevent offensive content’ from appearing on the state's license plates.

Among the rejected requests were configurations such as "GYATTT," "GTJIGGY," and "OMGWTF," all of which were deemed too foul, lewd, or rude for public display.

The DMV utilizes an ‘offensive-omit list,’ filled with offensive words and terms, to automatically reject such requests. Some of the other rejected configurations are so inappropriate that they are not safe to mention in the workplace.

The offensive-omit list has been compiled over the years based on recommendations from the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators and known offensive words and terms. Its purpose is to ensure that license plates in Colorado ‘remain respectful and do not offend or disturb others.’

In Colorado, drivers have the option to personalize their license plates from a selection of 218 designs for an additional cost of $60 on top of the regular fees. Personalized plate renewal fees range from $25 to $75 and can be conveniently completed online or at a county motor vehicle office.

Some rejected plates were already issued, reserved for auction, or already included in the offensive-omit list. However, individuals who receive a rejection can appeal the decision through the Colorado Department of Revenue's Hearings Division.
