Colorado Department of Corrections investigator charged with forging official report

A Colorado Department of Corrections investigator is facing a felony forgery charge for allegedly falsifying a law enforcement report.

Gary Spangler, a 60-year-old investigator, was charged with forgery in November, according to court records.

The charge stems from allegations that Spangler attempted to defraud the Office of the Inspector General, which is responsible for handling the Colorado Department of Corrections' internal affairs and criminal investigations. The complaint states that he made or altered a law enforcement report on October 20 with the intent to deceive the office.

Unfortunately, the brief complaint does not provide further details about the circumstances surrounding the alleged crime.

Alondra Gonzalez, a spokesperson for the Colorado Department of Corrections, declined to answer questions about the case, stating that Spangler is currently on paid administrative leave pending an internal investigation.

During his appearance in Fremont County District Court, Spangler expressed his belief that he would be terminated from his position. He stated that he was trying to understand the basis of the charge and hoped to speak directly with prosecutors from the 11th Judicial District Attorney Linda Stanley's office regarding the case and the allegations against him.

Spangler emphasized that he would remain honest and upfront throughout the process.

According to state records, Spangler is certified as a law enforcement officer by the Colorado Police Officer Training and Standards Board.
