Sandra Day O'Connor, the inaugural woman to hold the position of justice on the U.S. Supreme Court, has passed away.

O'Connor, aged 93, departed in Phoenix, Arizona, on Friday, succumbing to complications arising from advanced dementia, likely Alzheimer's, and a respiratory ailment, as per a statement from the Supreme Court.

Initially appointed to the court in 1981 by President Ronald Reagan, O'Connor dedicated nearly a quarter-century of service, ultimately retiring in 2006.

Chief Justice John Roberts, conveying sentiments on behalf of the court, remarked, "Sandra Day O'Connor, a native of the American Southwest, forged a historic path as the first female Justice in our nation. Confronting this challenge with resolute determination, unquestionable competence, and engaging openness."

Roberts continued, "The Supreme Court grieves the loss of a cherished colleague, a staunchly independent advocate for the rule of law, and a compelling champion for civic education. Furthermore, we honor her lasting impact as a genuine public servant and patriot."
